If you follow me on Instagram...you'll know that the last few weeks have been filled with lots of fun custom prints for kids. If you don't follow me on Instagram...ummm, you should. Besides seeing all the stationery, invitations, prints and gifts that come out of the studio weekly...you get to see a little bit more about the behind-the-scenes process, the occasional Friday afternoon G&T...and of course, the totally-unrelated-but-I-can't-help-myself pictures of my adorable little puppy, Dante.
If you follow this blog regularly...you'll know that I recently went to Amsterdam...and I may not have mentioned it back then, but we stayed at this gorgeous Airbnb apartment with a huge open-plan kitchen...lots of palm trees in the living room, a giant jacuzzi tub and our very own little balcony (complete with giant sea shell to put cigarette butts in). It was one of those perfectly designed apartments...the ones that say, yeah, we happen to have such great taste that even the pile of magazines we casually left lying around is worthy of a photograph...not the ones that say we hired a professional interior designer to turn this into a severe and unrealistic living space made up of star design pieces straight out of Architectural Digest. You know what I mean?
Anyway...one of the things that struck me the most was the kids play room. Soft colours, gorgeous wooden Scandinavian toys (and not a lot of them), and some simple, classy prints on the walls. I love to imagine that one day, if or when I have kids...and someone randomly calls to say they're going to pop in, I won't be hectically running around, cleaning up and tripping over gawdy Fisher-Price objects that sing Old MacDonalds Farm on repeat if you push the wrong button. I'd rather believe that I'll walk casually past the simple, smoky blue and always-tidy kids room, smile proudly to myself, and head for the wine fridge to crack open a bottle of rose.
But before I get carried away talking about my imaginary perfect, tidy and stylish children...let's talk about some real kids...and the prints I've been working on for them. A perfectly unique and special gift for a new baby, 1st (or any other) birthday...or even a teenager, finally ready to revamp their childhood bedroom and turn it into something a little more grown up. You know, get rid of their princess purple walls and undersea themed curtains. Yep, that was me, both of those. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
So. It can just be a big, bold, fun name...
Or something a little more detailed and personalised...like this spunky number we did for little Felix...with some French words thrown in as a nod to his Francophile dad, and some Italian ones for mom.
Or the slightly more minimal concept for his new baby cousin Alexander. My thought is...if you're going to have someone hand write a bunch of words for a gift...why not make them personalised and meaningful. If you're just going to get "Peace, Love, Joy..." you may as well pick it up at Target. Include cities you've traveled to...books you've read...games you played as kids, and of course Abracadabra!
Now that we're warmed up...why stop at one? I'm a big fan of triptychs...like this very special one, inspired by vintage Grand Prix posters, for a little boy who loves his red race cars. Again, the joys of getting something custom made. Let's talk about the parents...the child...what he or she loves...and work together to create something that's not only going to brighten up their little room in a special way...but will likely be something they hang on to even when they do one day decide to redecorate. I'd totally keep these!
And then there are the girls. We could go floral, flowy, and elegant, like these two prints for sisters Liora and Liya...
Or we can combine names for kids who share a room...or turn them into a gift for a special grandmother or godmother as we did with this one. Use your own photographs...throw in her favourite tree or flower...get creative! Make it count.
And then...we could go a little more playful and surreal like this berry coloured print for little Zahara...
...Or something uber Letterist-like in chic black and grey for a slightly older (and in this case, ridiculously sophisticated) teenage girl. Ok, this isn't an actual teenage girl's room. I treated myself to my retail therapy on iStock this morning and got some cool interior photos to stick my prints into. Score! Cannot wait to play with these some more.
Until then...I challenge you to either make your own child's room a little more special with a print or two (or seven)...or to be the perfect friend, aunt, or godmother and deliver the ultimate personalised gift. Let's make stuff!
